Three Benefits of Memorizing Scripture and 2018 Scripture Memory Challenge

I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. PS 119:11 Join the Scripture Memory Challenge!

The attacker moves toward me; I banish the attack with my sword! Because I have a scripture ready in my memory, I feel like a valiant knight prepared to whip out my sword and slay the forces of darkness with the Word of God!  I believe that committing scripture to memory is a worthwhile discipline for every Christ-follower. Introducing: The 2018 Scripture Memory Challenge!

Now, don’t be groaning! It doesn’t have to be hard; there are tools we can use to make things more memorable if you will accept the challenge to memorize just one verse a week throughout 2018. I will provide tools and hints to help you.

I think there are three valuable reasons to memorize scripture:

It becomes a point of focus.

Making a conscious effort to focus on what God has to say is spending quality time with God. When you focus on His word, you let God do the talking while you do the listening and learning. Such total focus on God is worship my friend! Our worship pleases God! This focus helps us to avoid sin. “I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.” Psalm 119:11 (NLT)

Spiritual battles will come!

Most of the battles we face in life are spiritual, not physical, we need to be prepared with spiritual tools.  Psalm 91: 4 tells us “His faithful promises are our armor and protection.” (NLT) And as Ephesians 6 describes the armor of God, it tells us that the Word of God is Sword the Spirit wields.  (Ephesians 6:17) So, those who memorize verses are both protected and armed for battle.

Provides a powerful testimony.

Christ-followers must be prepared to give an answer for the hope that is in us. (I Peter 3:15). What better answer could we possibly have than the powerful word of God? Hebrews 4:12 describes the word as powerful and effective. God’s word wins souls, it convicts, and it convinces. Why not be instantly ready to use the word when you need it?
